The authors integrate coplanar gold terahertz transmission lines directly onto x-cut thin-film lithium niobate (600 nm LN on SiO2/Si), engineering the line's effective index (n_TL β 2.25β2.3) to match the optical group index (n_g β 2.25), enabling collinear, co-propagating phase matching between 60-fs telecom pump pulses and THz waves. This yields a coherence length of 5 mm at 1 THz (0.3 mm at 4 THz), sub-wavelength confinement (S_eff/λ² β 10β»β΅), and a measured emitter spectrum spanning 200 GHzβ3.5 THz (10-dB bandwidth ~2.5 THz) with ~50 dB dynamic range and 57 V/m peak-to-peak field β a ~100Γ field improvement over the group's prior TFLN work .
Three complementary capabilities are shown: (1) broadband emission via optical rectification with antenna out-coupling; (2) MHz-rate EO amplitude control (Ξ·_field = 2.7 V/m/pJ; Ξ·_mod = 30.6 V/m/V) operating within ~8% of the shot-noise limit (160 nV measured vs 148 nV expected); and (3) on-chip electro-optic detection reaching 3 THz with 60 dB dynamic range at 100 ms integration β outperforming a commercial InGaAs PCA (~2 THz) and using ~76Γ less probe power than free-space GaP EOS. Open-ended transmission lines also function as strip-line cavities (S11 >90% below 1.7 THz), producing discrete, length-tunable resonances .
Strengths: The core physics is self-consistent β the 3.5 THz emission cutoff matches the computed coherence-length limit, and the full-field model reproduces time-domain amplitudes, resonance spacing, and linewidths. Data and plotting code are openly deposited (Zenodo DOI 10.5281/zenodo.15316587), and emitter and detector share the same x-cut TFLN platform, strengthening the integration claim.
Limitations the authors disclose: The opticalβTHz mode overlap for generation is only Ξ_OR β 0.1 (vs 0.6 for detection); THz radiative and absorption losses and phase mismatch degrade high-frequency performance (detector roll-off 25.1 dB/THz vs 14.4 dB/THz for the input pulse); and optical probe coupling is below 0.1%, capping a potential +20 dB dynamic-range improvement. Estimated on-line fields (10β΅β10βΆ V/m) rest on a chain of correction factors (Fresnel reflections, NA limits, asymmetric emission) rather than direct measurement β a plausible but indirect inference .
Blind spots BGPT adds: Only single devices per geometry were characterized (two cavity lengths; three emitter lengths) with no replication statistics or device-to-device variability reported β common in chip photonics but limiting reproducibility claims. The THz beam shape is explicitly non-Gaussian and frequency-dependent, complicating free-power comparisons with bulk sources. Absolute THz output power or conversion efficiency (photons-out per photon-in) is not reported in the main text, making cross-platform benchmarking (e.g., against InP photomixers or QCL-based integrated systems ) difficult. Falsification would require showing phase-matching is not the operative mechanism (geometry changes leaving bandwidth unchanged) or measured bandwidths failing to track the predicted l_eff(Ο).
Bottom line: A well-executed, internally validated demonstration that meaningfully advances chip-scale THz photonics; main open questions are efficiency scaling, device variability, and absolute power benchmarks.
