What the evidence actually shows. The only direct neurophysiological support for the hypothesis comes from intracranial sEEG in 20 epilepsy patients performing verbal fluency: hippocampal theta power scaled with the semantic distance between successively retrieved words, and theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling (5.2β7.2 Hz phase; 83β98 Hz amplitude) increased both at word onset (p=0.013) and during long-range cluster switches (Ξ²=0.036, HDI [0.014, 0.058]), with hippocampusβlateral temporal cortex coupling suggesting hippocampal coordination of conceptual search . Behaviorally, inter-word latencies tracked semantic distance (t(19)=9.118, p<0.001), establishing the distance-tracking foundation the hypothesis builds upon.
The critical gap. Nothing in the available records involves early blind individuals, numerical distance, or the mental number line. The hypothesis conflates three distinct constructs each requiring independent evidence: (1) hippocampal theta tracking of abstract distance (supported, in sighted epilepsy patients only); (2) numerical distance on the mental number line engaging the same mechanism (untested β the bee review reports a Weber-like numerical distance effect and left-to-right magnitude organization behaviorally, but with no hippocampal or theta data, and insect mushroom bodies are not homologous to mammalian hippocampus ); (3) recruitment in early blindness (no data whatsoever). Cross-species extrapolation from bee behavior to human hippocampal oscillations is a weak inferential bridge.
Battle-testing the parallels. Hidden assumptions: the sEEG sample was clinical (drug-resistant epilepsy, lateral temporal contacts), limiting generalizability to healthy brains, and semantic distance was computed from FastText embeddings β an analyst-chosen metric; a numerical distance effect might map differently. The blind population prediction is also theoretically vulnerable: if early blindness reorganizes number processing onto occipital/parietal spatial systems, hippocampal involvement could be reduced rather than enhanced β the hypothesis only considers one direction of plasticity. What would falsify it: MEG/iEEG in early blind individuals performing number comparison showing hippocampal theta uncorrelated with numerical distance (n=0 such data currently), or showing theta effects driven by working-memory load or articulation rather than distance per se.
Verdict (confidence: moderate). The sighted anchor is real but modest (Ξ²=0.012, ~3 contacts' worth of uncertainty); the blind mental-number-line extension is an untested conjecture β plausible, novel, and worth preregistered testing, but not currently supported.
