    The key reanalysis: studies long cited as rejecting a temporal gradient of RI (Wickelgren 1977's reading) mostly used two-point designs confounding consolidation interference (early interpolation) with retrieval inhibition (late interpolation).     Critical Assessment

Later work reveals additional active forgetting mechanisms not anticipated here: microglia mediate complement-dependent synaptic elimination of engram networks , and epigenetic COMPASS-driven transcription actively drives forgetting in C. elegans . Human retrieval dynamics also show retrieval-induced forgetting via suppression operating independently of consolidation . The framework remains a major partial account, not a complete theory.
