The study resurrects 21 Lactuca serriola populations (three per 100-mm precipitation band across seven bands) sampled in Israel and the Golan Heights in 1976 and 2020, grown through a refresher generation to control maternal/storage effects, then into a second generation with an experimental drought treatment .
Three principal quantitative findings: (1) the 2020 cohort flowered 7.46 Β± 2.04 d earlier than 1976 (F = 13.32, P < 0.001); (2) experimental drought advanced flowering by β21.60 Β± 1.74 d (P < 0.001), and earlier flowering was associated with higher fitness, with plastic advance offsetting ~24.3% of drought-induced fitness loss; (3) contrary to the a priori hypothesis, flowering time decreased by ~12 d per additional 100 mm of precipitation of the wettest month (β0.122 Β± 0.04; P = 0.008)βwetter origins flowered earlier, so the spatial cline ran opposite to the temporal shift .
Strengths. The three-way design (resurrection + space-for-time + manipulation) is unusually rigorous; the refresher generation and G Γ E fitness analysis directly address plasticity-vs-genetics confounds, and the drought-escape interpretation is supported by fitness data showing earlier flowering partially compensates for drought losses. The spatial-temporal mismatch is not a footnoteβthe authors foreground it, consistent with other PNAS demonstrations that spatial responses fail to predict temporal ones .
Limitations the authors acknowledge, and ones they do not. The cohort effect shrank from ~26 d in the refresher to 7.5 d in the second generation, and the authors concede multigenerational non-genetic (epigenetic) inheritance cannot be excludedβgenomic/epigenomic data would be needed. Two 1976 accessions came from single maternal plants; 1976 accessions were bulk-collected from unknown mothers while 2020 seeds were from β₯20 identified mothers, an asymmetry that could bias within-population sampling. The drought treatment (5-day water withholding cycles) is mild relative to field droughts, and greenhouse conditions may not reflect field selection. Removing three high-elevation populations eliminated the spatial cline entirely, so the reversed gradient may partly reflect elevation covariates rather than precipitation. Nitrogen deposition and CO2 enrichment were considered but not fully excluded as alternative drivers .
What would change the conclusion. If genomic analysis showed the 1976 and 2020 cohorts to be genetically indistinguishable at flowering-time loci, the evolutionary interpretation would collapse to residual maternal/epigenetic effects. If reciprocal field transplants showed the reversed cline is purely elevation-driven, the space-for-time caution would weaken somewhatβthough the temporal advance itself would stand.
