Simon 2003 is a high-quality, mechanistic narrative review that (a) synthesizes then-available genetic and biochemical evidence that neutrophil lifespan is controlled by interacting death-receptor, mitochondrial (Bcl-2 family/calpain), caspase and ROI modules and (b) highlights modulators (GM-CSF/G-CSF, SHP-1, CIS) relevant to inflammation β valuable as a 2003 knowledge-state snapshot but limited by later discoveries (PCNA, CDKs, pathogen and lipid modulators) and by reliance on in vitro/murine data .
