The study analyzed organic-carbon isotopes, radiocarbon ages, and magnetic stratigraphy from three cores located on the East China Sea shelf margin, slope, and Okinawa Trough floor. It reported recurring isotopic cycles interpreted in relation to changing marine and terrestrial organic-matter contributions and palaeoclimatic evolutionβnot the timing or tectonic stage of Okinawa Trough extension.
Therefore, the extension-stage question remains unresolved from this evidence. A defensible answer would require independently sourced geological and geophysical studies documenting the troughβs rifting history, active deformation, crustal structure, and age constraints.
