Research trajectory. Taiyo Mineo (ORCID 0000-0003-3256-5498, University of Electro-Communications, often co-authoring with Hayaru Shouno) has built a coherent, single-threaded research program in lossless audio compression: from kernel spectral clustering for video tags (2014) and temporal-logic controller tuning (2016), to the natural-gradient sign algorithm (2020β2021), the NARU codec (2021β2022), the ResNet-style hierarchical residual-prediction codec (APSIPA 2022, his most-cited work with 8 of his ~13 total citations), and the SRLA codec (2026). OpenAlex lists 10 works, h-index 2, cited-by 13 β metrics typical of a late-stage PhD student or early-career researcher with a small but specialized audience.
Reported values from NARU's Tables 2β3: NARU beats FLAC, WavPack, TTA and MPEG4-ALS on size but trails Monkey's Audio (54.32%) while decoding faster than it but slower than FLAC/TTA .
Strengths. (1) Reproducibility: both codecs are open-source (github.com/aikiriao/NARU and /SRLA), with SRLA pinned to tag v0.0.14 and a commit hash β above-average transparency. (2) Statistical care: SRLA uses planned paired Wilcoxon signed-rank tests with Holm correction and rank-biserial effect sizes on all 211 RWC tracks β rare rigor in codec papers. (3) Honest self-assessment: Mineo explicitly reports unfavorable results, e.g., the headline SVR component yields only ~0.014 percentage points of size gain while inflating encoding time from ~1.6β1.7Γ to 27β56Γ , and NARU honestly concedes Monkey's Audio superiority. This falsification-minded, negative-results-included reporting is a genuine scientific virtue.
Weaknesses and blind spots. (1) Marginal effect sizes: wins over established codecs are fractions of a percentage point (NARU vs FLAC: 0.69 pp; SRLA vs ALS: 1.04 pp), and both codecs lose to high-effort presets (Monkey's Audio-c3000, TAK-p4m) . (2) Narrow evaluation scope: only the RWC 16-bit/44.1 kHz stereo corpus; no high-resolution audio, speech, or statistical testing of codec differences in the NARU paper. (3) Single-machine timing: all speed ratios from one CPU/OS, single-threaded builds . (4) Algorithm-level evidence is thin: real-data prediction comparisons come from a single tune's first second, and the natural-gradient algorithms' steady-state error degrades under strongly correlated inputs . (5) Cost-benefit gaps: adaptive frame segmentation gives ~0.2β1% size gains for ~50% encoding-time increase at V=5, and >100% at Vβ₯6 β a trade-off the author acknowledges but does not resolve.
Verdict on scientific strength. Mineo is a technically competent, methodologically careful niche researcher whose work meets solid engineering-science standards (open code, ablations, effect sizes, honest counterevidence) but has limited external uptake (h-index 2; 8 citations concentrated in one 2022 paper) and modest practical impact β improvements are real but small, and encoder costs are high. Confidence: moderate-to-high, based on two full-text evidence records plus bibliometric data; his 2022 APSIPA hierarchical residual-prediction paper and dissertation were not available in full text, so that line of work is assessed only bibliometrically.
